GPC finishes 5th at national championships

Plano, Tx. – Georgia Perimeter College men’s tennis team falls in the semifinals at the national junior college athletic association championship tournament in Plano, Texas.

Gabriel Frias seeded No. 3 in the No. 1 singles flight, cruised by Scott Medders 6-0, 6-2 in the round of 16.  In the quarterfinals, he defeated No. 6 seed Dmytro Hryhorash 6-2, 6-4 before losing to No. 1 seed and eventual champion Alejandro Gonzalez (Laredo community college) 6-3, 6-4.

Aaron Balog lost in three sets to Ivan Caballero 4-6, 6-4, 2-6 in the semifinals of the No. 2 singles flight. In the No.3 singles flight, Gaston Bagnati, who only lost six games in the first two rounds, fell to Javier Herrera (Tyler Junior College) 4-6, 7-6, 2-6.

GPC finished the season with its fifteenth Georgia Junior College conference championship and will look for its fifth national championship next season.

GPC men’s tennis wins region championship

 Dunwoody, Ga. - The No. 3 ranked Georgia Perimeter College men’s tennis team cruised to the Georgia Junior College Athletic Association conference championship without losing a set and only dropping four games in six matches to Gordon College on its home courts Thursday.

Georgia Perimeter was up three points because Gordon College forfeited the doubles matches to begin the tournament.

The Jaguars quickly dismantled Gordon College in the singles matches in less than one hour. 

Freshman Gabriel Frias (Spain), the tournament’s MVP and the No. 4 ranked junior college player, defeated Diego Villegas 6-0, 6-1 in the No. 1 singles flight. 

In the No.2 singles flight, sixth ranked Stefan Balog (Germany) defeated Gabriel Arraiz 6-0, 6-1, while his brother, Aaron Balog (Germany), the No. 17 ranked player, downed Walter Moore 6-0, 6-0 in the No. 3 flight.

This is GPC’s thirteenth conference championship in fifteen years.  The Jaguars won 11 consecutive championships from 1991-2001 and placed second last season behind conference rival Abraham Baldwin. 

GPC head coach Solomon Demeke was named GJCAA region XVII coach of the year.  The Jaguars will play for its fifth NJCAA national championship in Plano, Texas, May 15-21.
