Curriculum Changes

Beginning Spring 2012 students will not be able to take foreign language classes in their native language at the 1001 and 1002 levels. This applies to all foreign languages. The following sentence has been added to the course description of every 1002 and 1002 foreign language class: "This course is not open to native speakers, which includes anyone who used the language as his or her principal language of education."

Beginning immediately, ATEC 1201 has been replaced with RSCH 1203 in the Radiologic Technology program with DeKalb Medical. ATEC 1201 will continue to be honored for those students who entered the college this fall or earlier. However, new students will need to take RSCH 1203.

Beginning immediately for students who entered fall 2011, the Mathematics program of study Area F requirements have been modified to include MATH 2431 and to set the carry over hours from Areas A and D to 0-2. The program advisement form has also listed MATH 1431 as an Area D option.

The carry over hours from Areas A and D have also be set from 0-2. The program advisement form has also listed MATH 1431 as an Area D option.

Beginning fall 2012 the wording of the prerequisite for CSCI 1300 has changed. Several math courses had been listed in the previous prerequisite; now the prerequisite just says MATH 1111 with a "C" or better. Students with a higher level math course will also meet this prerequisite.

Beginning fall 2012 the math prerequisite for CSCI 1301 has been removed. The new prerequisite simply says CSCI 1300 with a "C" or better. Since CSCI 1300 has a math prerequisite, none was needed for CSCI 1301.

Beginning fall 2012, the following computer science courses have been deleted: CSCI 2900C, CSSI 2900G, CSCI 2900J, and CSCI 2660. The generic CSCI 2900 Special Topics course is retained, but the special variations for the course have been deleted.

Beginning fall 2012, the following engineering courses have been deleted: ENGR 1011 and ENGR 1012.

Beginning fall 2012, the pre/co-requisite for ENGR 1603 has changed. Previously, MATH 1113 or MATH 2431 was a prerequisite or co-requisite. In fall 2012, MATH 1113 or higher with a "C" or better will be a prerequisite only. It will no longer be a co-requisite, so students must have completed the course before they take ENGR 1603.

Beginning fall 2012, the prerequisite for ENGR 1671 has been reworded to say "CSCI 1300 or higher." The previous prerequisite specified CSCI 1300 only. PHYS 2211 with a "C" also remains as a prerequisite.

Beginning fall 2012, the prerequisite for ENGR 2606 has changed. The previous prerequisite was ENGR 2605. Fall 2012, the prerequisite will also include MATH 2432.

Beginning fall 2012, the prerequisite for MATH 1431 has been reworded. Previously, the prerequisite required successful completion of any collegiate level math course. Fall 2012, the prerequisite specifies any collegiate level mathematics course with a "C" or better.

Beginning fall 2012, the prerequisite for MATH 1433 has changed. Previously, MATH 1101 or higher with a "C" was required. Fall 2012, the prerequisite is MATH 1111, or higher, with a "C."

Beginning immediately, all science courses for which the lab was optional now require the lab as a co-requisite for all students who began enrollment fall 2011 or after. This affects ASTR 1010, ASTR 1020, ENVS 1401, GEOL 1121, and GEOL 1122. The new Core requires that students take two lab-science courses; therefore, taking a lecture only science class is no longer an option for new students.

The prerequisite of beginning swimming for the intermediate swimming course (PHED 1052) has been remove. Student will still need to demonstrate adequate swimming ability to take the course, but beginning swimming will no longer be a prerequisite.

The course descriptions for CHEM 1211, 1211L, 1212, and 1212L have changed to better reflect the content of those courses.

The program of study in Health Sciences with a concentration in Radiologic Sciences no longer includes diagnostic sonography. Georgia Health Sciences University has deactivated their program in Medical Diagnostic Sonography; there is no senior public college to which diagnostic sonography articulates.

Starting summer 2012, the Area C Humanities elective for the career programs (Dental Hygiene, Nursing, Radiologic Technology and the AAS in Sign Language Interpreting) can NO longer be a foreign language course. Students must choose a literature, fine arts, or humanities course as their humanities (Core Area C) elective. This change is to meet a SACS requirement.

Starting in the fall, there is a new Theatre course (THEA 2450 - Stage and Theatre Management) in Area F in the Theatre program of study. In addition, the Theatre program will have three different tracks for students to pursue--music theatre track, performance track, or technical theatre track.

All of the 3rd and 4th year sign language interpreting classes for the new BA degree starting in the fall have been approved.

For fall 2012, the Regents' Prep courses, ENGL 0098, READ 0097, and REEN 0095 have been deleted.

Fall 2012, the course descriptions for ENGL 2111 and ENGL 2112 have been changed.

For fall 2012, the course descriptions for FILM 1010, FILM 1010H, FILM 2700, and FILM 2900 have been changed.

For fall 2012, the course descriptions for all foreign language courses at the 1001 level have been changed.

For fall 2012, the course descriptions for all foreign language courses from the 1002 level to the 2610 level have been changed. In addition, the prerequisites for all of these foreign language courses have been changed. A "C" or better will now be required to move from one level to the next. This means in the summer a student will need to make at least a "C" if he or she wants to take the next level in the fall.

For fall 2012, there are several changes to the ESL curriculum. The integrated skills courses (ENSL 0070 and ENSL 0080) are being replaced by academic reading courses (ENSL 0073 and ENSL 0083). In addition, the advanced six hour academic English course (ENSL 0090) is being replaced by a three hour academic reading course.

Starting summer 2012, the joint program with Georgia Piedmont Technical College in medical assisting is deleted. GPTC no longer offers a program in medical assisting.

Beginning fall 2012, we have a new AS program in personal training. Two new course were created for Area F for this program, Personal Training I and Personal Training II.

Beginning spring 2012, the Fire Management career and certificate programs are no longer accepting new students. All but three fire management classes have been deleted. There are three remaining fire management courses that will continue as they are options in Area F for Homeland Security.

Beginning fall 2012, there is a new honors course in MATH 1113.

Beginning fall 2012, the AA programs in biology, geology, chemistry, and physics have become AS degrees.

Beginning fall 2012, the AS program in Pre-Dent/Pre-Med/Pre-Pharm has been deleted and is no longer available for new students. Student who want to pursue dentistry or medicine should follow the biology program of study, and students who wish to purse pharmacy should follow the chemistry program of study.

Beginning fall 2012, the prerequisites for Historical Geology and lab (GEOL 1122 and 1122L) have changed. Now, Physical Geology (GEOL 1121 and 1121L) will be prerequisites for Historical Geology.

Beginning fall 2012, there is a new course PLAS 2000 (Prior Learning Assessment Seminar). This course is designed to help students get college-level credit for past learning/training. The course has special enrollment requirements and currently is outside the Core. Tamra Ortgies-Young is the contact person for this course.

Beginning fall 2012, there are numerous changes to prerequisites and co-requisites for several dental hygiene courses.

Beginning fall 2012, the course descriptions for ENGL 2121 and ENGL 2122 have changed.

Beginning fall 2012, GPCS 1010 is replacing HEDS 1011 as a requirement for Learning Support students. This requirement will be phased in as follows: Fall 2012 - all students required to enroll in two Learning Support courses will be required to take GPCS 1010; Fall 2013 - all students required to enroll in one or more Learning Support courses will be required to take GPCS 1010.

Beginning fall 2012, there is a honors course in PHIL 2030 - Introduction of Ethics.

Beginning fall 2012, the course descriptions for THEA 1701 and 1702 have changed. In addition, these course will now receive normal transfer credit, not institutional credit.

Beginning fall 2012, all Area F courses in the Theatre program will require a grade of "C" or better.

Beginning fall 2012, SPAN 1102H has been deleted.

Beginning fall 2012, The prerequisites for ENGL 2600 - Creative Writing have changed. Now, students must have passed ENGL 1101 with a "C" or better to take ENGL 2600.

The proposed program of study for the new BS degree in Health Informatics has been changed. The program now follows the AS in Health Sciences with a concentration in Health Information Administration in Areas A-F.
Changes to Program Advisement Forms

August 3, 2011: The Dental Hygiene program advisement form was changed to reflect that there are no longer any evening clinic rotations. The bulleted item now reads "All professional courses are only offered during the day."

September 7, 2011: The Business program advisement form was changed to correct a problem with the note for MATH 1113 in Area A. It had referenced note "c" instead of note "b."

September 12, 2011: The Psychology program advisement form was changed to correct a problem with an Area F note on CSCI 1300. It should reference "D," not "E."

October 11, 2011: ATEC 1201 has been replaced by RSCH 1203 on the program advisement form in the Radiologic Technology program with DeKalb Medical.

October 11, 2011: On the Mathematics program advisement form, MATH 1431 has been added in Area D, MATH 2431 has been added to Area F, and the carry over hours from Areas A and D have been adjusted to 0-2.

November 3, 2011: The Social Work program advised form has been changed to add a note in Area D to advise students to take BIOL 1402 and 1402L. Students need a biology course and lab to complete four-year degrees in social work.

November 16, 2011: The Sport Management program advisement form has been changed to note that PHED 2022 is not an option for Additional Requirements. It is a required course in Area F.

December 1, 2011: The Computer Science program advisement form has been changed to include MATH 2431 and MATH 2641 in Area F. MATH 1431 has also been added to Area D. The carry over hours in Area F have changed to 0-2, and the note about the carry over hours has changed.

January 19, 2012: The Philosophy program advisement form was updated to show that the PHIL 2020 and PHIL 2030 cannot be taken in Area C as they are required courses in Area F.

February 6, 2012: The Health Sciences with a concentration in Radiologic Sciences' program advisement form notes that diagnostic sonography is no longer included as part of the program. Georgia Health Sciences University has deactivated their program in diagnostic medical sonography.

February 27, 2012: A note "e" was added to the Health Sciences with a concentration in Health Information Administration program advisement form encouraging students to take MATH 1431 in Area D.

February 27, 2012: Added a note to the Dental Hygiene, Nursing, Radiologic Technology, and AAS in Sign Language Interpreting program advisement forms stating that a foreign language course may not be used to fulfill the Care Area C Humanities elective.

March 12, 2012: Removed the brackets and "and" from the physics courses in Area F for the engineering program advisement form.

March 23, 2012: The number of hours that students must take at GPC has changed from 18 to 25 on the Radiologic Technology program advisement form.

April 23, 2012: The program advisement form for Radiologic Technology with DeKalb Medical has been changed to include a disclaimer about the transferability of courses taken at DeKalb Medical. It should be noted that the program advisement form is now two pages.

May 8, 2012: The program advisement form for the AA in American Sign Language has been posted to the Web. The program's official start date is fall 2012.

July 3, 2012: The note about having to take 6 hours in Area B was modified for the biology, chemistry, geology, physics, HS-medical technology, HS-radiologic sciences, and HS-respiratory therapy advisement forms. Now, the note also specifies that students who take MATH 1431 in Area D will also need to take 6 hours in Area B as well as those students who take MATH 1113 in Area B.

July 3, 2012: The theatre form was updated for the new class THEA 2450 and the three tracks in Area F. Also, beginning with new students in fall 2012, all Area F courses in theatre must be completed with a "C" or better.
