    CDS  Policies

Georgia Perimeter College is open and accessible to students with disabilities. We are committed to providing assistance to enable qualified students to accomplish their educational goals, as well as assuring equal opportunity to derive all of the benefits of campus life.

Georgia Perimeter College has devoted much energy to meeting the requirements of Section 504, Federal Rehabilitation Act of 1973 and its amendments, and to the Americans with Disabilities Act of 1990. CDS serves as a full-time advocate for students with disabilities, as well as a resource for faculty, staff and administration.

    ADA Grievance Procedure

Students who have a complaint about accommodations provided by Georgia Perimeter College must attempt to resolve conflicts by contacting the Coordinator of Disability Services on the Campus where they have applied for services.

If the results of this process are unsatisfactory to the student, he or she must contact the Director of Disability Services located at the Center for Disability Services at the Clarkston Campus located at 555 North Indian Creek Drive, Clarkston, Georgia, 30021. Telephone: 678-891-3385. The Director will investigate the complaint and make reasonable efforts to resolve the matter. The investigation shall be informal but thorough, affording all persons an opportunity to submit evidence or other relevant information.

If the complainant is not satisfied with the decision of the Director of Disability Services, he/she can contact the Assistant Vice President of Educational Affairs for Student Services located at the Decatur Campus located at 3251 Panthersville Road, Decatur, GA.

    Telephone: 678-891-2452.

The Assistant Vice President shall provide a written or verbal final response to the student.

Use of this grievance procedure does not limit a student’s pursuit of other remedies, including the right to pursue a complaint with the U.S. Department of Education, Office of Civil Rights.

    Policy of Nondiscrimination

The Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) gives individuals with disabilities civil rights protection that is similar to that provided to all individuals on the basis of race, sex, national origin, and religion. The act guarantees equal opportunity in employment, public accommodations, transportation, state and local government services, and telecommunications.

In addition, Section 504 of the 1973 Rehabilitation act states: "No otherwise qualified handicapped individual in the United States shall, solely on the basis of his/her handicap, be denied benefits of, or be subjected to discrimination under any program or activity receiving federal financial assistance".

    CDS Test Policies

Students are responsible for scheduling exams with the Center for Disability Services (CDS).  A Test Accommodations Form is required.  The following guidelines are a minimum standard to obtain services through the CDS Office.

    Procedures for Scheduling Tests

For day classes during regular office hours, the student should schedule the exam no later than three (3) business days before the exam to receive accommodations.  Faculty must have reasonable notice of at least a week.

For evening classes (after office hours), exams will be proctored during office hours as arranged.  If special accommodations through CDS after office hours are absolutely necessary, we will make every effort to be flexible.

It is the student’s responsibility to notify the CDS Office if tests are canceled, if dates change, or if the CDS Office is no longer needed for a particular test.  If the student does not show up for the scheduled exam, he/she must make arrangements with the instructor for a make-up test before being allowed to reschedule the test with CDS.

    Testing Policies

No personal items are allowed in testing rooms.

Before beginning the exam, please advise the CDS coordinator or staff of any personal health needs that will require frequent breaks.  Prepare ahead for snacks or medications.  Extended time stated on the accommodations letter will be allowed.

Students are to remain in the designated testing room.  In case of emergency, the incomplete exam must be returned to the CDS Office.  If a student leaves the room without informing the CDS counselor/staff, the exam will be taken up and returned to the instructor.

Arriving late (up to 30 minutes) will not extend the scheduled ending time for the exam.

If a student arrives more than 30 minutes late for a scheduled exam, the CDS office may not administer the exam.  It will then be the student’s responsibility to go to the classroom to take the exam or speak to the instructor about rescheduling the exam in accordance with all CDS Testing Accommodations Policies and Procedures.

All students are held accountable under the GPC Academic Honesty Policy.  If a student is observed violating this policy, the test will be taken up, and the incident will be reported to the instructor.
