Geologists help locate and manage the Earth’s natural resources, including fossil fuels, metals, gemstones and a variety of minerals.
Why Study Geology: Geology-based careers involve a variety of activities, including: Protecting the environment, exploring for fossil fuels, monitoring earthquakes, mapping floods, controlling landslides, predicting volcanic eruptions and analyzing the evidence of climate change. To be succesfull, Geologists need an aptitude for science and math and a desire to better understand our planet.
“My GPC experience was the most meaningful of my academic career. The professors inspired and prepared me for the rigors of my doctorate program.”
Dr. Gwendolyn Rhodes, GPC Alumna
Career Opportunities
Geologists work in a variety of settings: the field, a laboratory or office. They work for companies that deal with our natural resources, but many jobs are available in government agencies and the educational sector. In the next decade, the demand for geoscientists is predicted to grow 22 percent.
By 2030, in the petroleum industry alone, the unmet demand for geoscientists is expected to reach 30,000.
Strong opportunities exist for geoscientists who speak a second language and are willing to work abroad.
Job opportunities also exist in high schools, where earth science teachers are in demand.
A bachelor's degree is required for entry-level employment in geology, but geologists often earn master’s degrees and doctorates. Salary depends on academic degree and chosen field but typically ranges from an entry level of $52,000 to $136,000.Some of the highest-paying jobs are in petroleum exploration.
For additional salary and job information, visit the Bureau of Labor Statistics website.
