Break the 'Sound Barriers'

Why Study Sign Language Interpreting?
American Sign Language (ASL) interpreters expand opportunities for people who are Deaf or Hard of Hearing by opening communication. With advances in online and video technologies, there is a growing demand for skilled ASL interpreters.

“As a former student, I can say that the SLIP gave me all the foundational tools necessary to achieve success in the field of Sign Language Interpreting.”

Rick Wright, Current GPC SLIP Instructor, GPC Alumnus, 2003

Georgia Perimeter College’s Sign Language Interpretation Program (SLIP)

Years of Experience, Years of Success
GPC’s program:
Is Georgia’s first and only nationally accredited program.
Instituted in 1978 and is the oldest interpreter preparation in Georgia
and one of the oldest in the country.
33 percent of the certified interpreters working in Georgia attended GPC.

A SLIP major can choose a Certificate Program or an Associate of Applied Science degree program in Sign Language Interpretation. Prerequisites exist, and completion of American Sign Language fluency courses does not guarantee admission into the interpreting program.

The Certificate Program consists of only the SLIP professional curriculum. It requires five semesters to complete, and is recommended for students who have completed an A.A. degree or higher in another program.  The Associate of Applied Science degree is the best option for students who do not yet hold a college degree. It includes the SLIP professional curriculum (courses identified by the prefix SLIP) and select general education courses.

Already have ASL skills?
If you have prior experience with ASL and want to place out of one or more of the ASL classes, schedule an appointment with the SLIP department for an informal skills assessment.
