I.††††††††† PURPOSE

The purpose of the Special Leave for Professional Enhancement is to provide full-time professional employees with an opportunity for professional growth and development. The leave, at half pay, provides opportunities for professional employees to engage in activities to acquire additional skills, competencies, and knowledge which will result in professional enrichment and improved performance at the College. Even if all the criteria are met, professional employees should understand that the College reserves the right to approve or deny the request for leave.

All full-time professional employees who have been employed at the College for at least five years are eligible to apply for a two-semester (faculty) or one year (Professional & Administrative personnel) Professional Enhancement Leave. Professional employees must have been employed at the College for at least three years to be eligible for a one semester or six month leave. Such leaves are granted primarily to increase the value of the recipient's further service both to his or her profession and to the College. Although there may be exceptions, this leave is ordinarily served by the pursuit of scholarship undertaken to enhance knowledge in pedagogical discipline and/or administrative areas. Faculty members may receive a two semester leave after five years; one semester leave after three years.Professional & Administrative employees may receive a one year leave after five years; six month leave after three years.

Within the resources available, the College grants professional enhancement leave for approved professional improvement activities in keeping with the following conditions:

  1. Eligible professional employees must secure copies of application blanks from their Department Chair/Immediate Supervisor or Provost's office. See Application for Professional Enhancement Leave.
  2. The application must be accompanied by a resume, a proposed plan for professional growth related to the individual's role at the College, and a statement clearly illustrating how the College may benefit from the professional employee's leave.
  3. In order for an application to be considered, the application forms must be completed and in the hands of the applicant's Department Chair/Immediate Supervisor one semester/six months in advance of the start of the requested leave in order to assure consideration. The Department Chair/Immediate Supervisor should rank the applications and provide suitable comments on all applications before forwarding them to the appropriate Provost/Vice President. The Vice President for Academic Affairs and Student Affairs (Academic and Student Affairs requests) and the Executive Vice President for Financial and Administrative Affairs must approve leave requests prior to the Presidentís review. The Executive Vice President for Financial and Administrative Affairs will then make his/her recommendation to the President. The President's recommendations for Professional Enhancement Leaves are presented to the Board of Regents for final approval.

All applications will be reviewed and considered based on the following factors:

A.††††††† The nature of the proposed leave and its probable value to the applicant, his or her department and the College at large.

B.†††††††† The years of service the applicant has accrued at the College.

C.††††††† Ability of supervisor to get a replacement for the employee who is on leave.

D.††††††† Preference will be given to graduate course work leading to a terminal degree or post- doctoral studies.

The person on such leave must agree in writing to return to the institution for at least one full year of service after the termination of the leave.

While on such leave, the individual is considered to be in the employ of Georgia Perimeter College and is entitled to all benefits accruing to personnel performing regular duties with the following exceptions: sick leave and annual leave, if applicable, will not accrue for the time the employee is on leave; disability insurance (long term and short term) is not in effect during the period of such leave; merit pay will not be awarded for time on leave.

Note:†† Any academic year in which a leave is taken cannot count as a year's service for purposes of promotion and/or tenure.

Upon conclusion of the special professional enhancement leave, a summary report is to be filed within thirty (30) days with the Department Chair/Immediate Supervisor to be forwarded to the College's President.
