803.1705 EMERITUS STATUS FOR FACULTY
Awarding Emeritus/Emerita Titles
POLICY
The institution may confer, at its discretion, the title
of “emeritus” on any retired and tenured professor, associate professor, or
assistant professor, or Board-approved non-tenure track faculty of equivalent
rank, who, at the time of retirement, had ten years or more of honorable and
distinguished service in the University System. This title may be conferred upon the recommendation of the President
of the institution in which the employee has served.
Section 803.17 Board of Regents Manual. Recommendation must be submitted by the
President’s office to the Chancellor no later than 30 days prior to the
effective date.
Emeritus status is an honor that includes the following
privileges:
1.
Name included in the faculty listing in the catalog
2.
Name inscribed on a plaque at District Office
3.
Certificate with name and emeritus/emerita status
4.
Library privileges
5.
Invitation to participate in College activities and functions
6.
Possession of a College ID card
7.
Provision for a parking permit
8.
E-mail account
The following criteria and procedure will be used to
recommend eligible faculty for emeritus status:
A. Any
retired and tenured professor, associate professor, or assistant professor, or
Board-approved non-tenure track faculty of equivalent rank, who, at the time of
retirement had ten years or more of honorable and distinguished service at
Georgia Perimeter College is eligible for Emeritus/Emerita status.
B.
The criteria used in selecting retired faculty members for this honor
shall include professional recognition in one or more of the following areas:
1.
Instruction excellence or innovation
2.
Institutional service recognition, awards, or honors
3.
Professional association recognition, awards, or honors
4.
Community service contributions, recognition, awards or honors
C.
A narrative is attached to the Emeritus Form that explains how the
candidate meets one or more of the selection criteria described in B above.
D. The process of awarding emeritus status
shall originate with the nomination by a current
faculty
member or by the faculty member’s department/discipline with the permission of
the
nominee. The appropriate nomination forms and
narrative to support the criteria will be
presented
to the Faculty Senate Chair who will give these to the Faculty Senate Screening
Committee
appointed by the Faculty Senate Chair.
(The majority of the committee shall be
made up
preferably of senior faculty most likely to have known the nominees.)
The committee will
screen the application for qualifications of the candidate and the accuracy and
completeness of the form. The chair of
the screening committee will send the committee’s recommendation to the Faculty
Senate Chair.
The Faculty Senate
Chair will present the nominee’s recommendation, along with the screening
committee’s recommendation, to the full Faculty Senate for a vote on the
awarding of emeritus status to the candidate.
A simple majority will prevail.
If not approved, the Faculty Senate Chair will notify the candidate and
the originator. Upon approval, the
recommendation from the Faculty Senate shall be presented to the President for
approval.
If the President
does not approve the candidate, the President notifies the candidate and the
Senate Chair. If approved by the
President, the nomination is forwarded to the Board of Regents in accordance
with Policy 803.17 of the University System of Georgia and with Georgia Perimeter
College procedure. After action by the
Board of Regents, the President notifies the Senate Chair and the candidate of
approval or non-approval.
