Dr. Sylvia R. Ramos is President of Houston Community College-Southeast, one of five regional colleges comprising Houston Community College System.  With HCCS since 1973, she is the only person to serve as HCC-Southeast President.  She assumed the post in 1991, prior to the January 1992 opening of the Eastside Campus, the first full-service, evening and weekend instructional site built by HCCS.

The President holds an Associate of Arts Degree from Victoria College, a Bachelor of Science Degree from Southeast Texas State University, a Master of Education degree from Sam Houston State University, and a Doctorate in Higher Education from the University of Houston.

 Dr. Ramos has fulfilled numerous leadership responsibilities in local, state and national organizations.  She currently is serving a three-year term on the boards of the American Association of Community Colleges (AACC) and the Advisory Council of the Association Liaison Office for University Cooperation in Development.  Dr. Ramos also is immediate past president of the National Community College Hispanic Council, an AACC affiliate organization, and a former president of the Texas Association of Chicanos in Higher Education.

Statewide, the president is a member of the Texas Higher Education Coordinating Board’s Health Professions Education Advisory Committee, its Planning Committee and its Task Force on Health Professions Education Committee.  She also has served on advisory boards for the American College of Testing (ACT) and the Texas A&M University Minority Leadership Program conducted by the Department of Vocational Education.

Locally, she serves on the board of directors of the Houston Hispanic Chamber of Commerce and is a member of Harrisburg Rotary Club.

Her most recent honors include being named Hispanic of the Year by Houston’s Fiestas Patrias organization and Educator of the Year by the League of United Latin American Citizens.
