MediaSPOTs Come to GPC
In Fall 2010, Georgia Perimeter College introduced MediaSPOTs to the Dunwoody and Clarkston campuses. The MediaSPOTs are state-of-the-art media production and post-production computer labs that offer equipment checkout, training, and other media services for all currently enrolled GPC students. Each MediaSpot features Mac Pro workstations with Final Cut Pro, Photoshop, Logic, and more! Students can learn professional video, audio, and photography techniques through short, hands-on workshops offered throughout the year.
“I learned more creating the video rather than memorizing a semester’s worth of work for an exam,” said Stephanie Pierce, an Early Childhood Education major. “This was more hands-on, plus I learned so much about group dynamics.”
Georgia Perimeter College Professor Mary Mattson challenged students in her class, Education 2120: Issues in Cultural Diversity and Education, to create three-to-six-minute documentaries as their final exam. The students worked in groups of four or five and focused on topics such as learning disabilities and gender issues in the classroom. Tracey Adkins, assistant director of instructional technology, and Jonathan Harris, digital media coordinator, co-taught Mattson’s students on use of video cameras and editing software.
The project is part of a larger plan to help students in all majors create cutting-edge videos and graphics right on campus. The Office of Information Technology, with the use of student technology funds, has created two student media labs at Clarkston and Dunwoody campuses. The labs contain Mac Pro work stations for video editing and an iMac station for graphics editing. The labs will have a sound room with audio equipment such as USB turntables, MIDI keyboards and percussion pads.
As part of the services offered by the media labs, students will be able to check out lighting kits, microphones, video cameras and still cameras. Harris will offer training on software and equipment available through the lab. Students are required to complete the appropriate training courses prior to checking out any equipment.
Although the MediaSpot is reserved for student use, faculty can consult with the Digital Media Coordinator, Jonathan Harris, to learn how they can design multimedia assignments and assessments for their classes, thereby creating an enhanced and enjoyable learning experience. MediaSPOT is another way Georgia Perimeter offers an education relevant to the times, Mattson said. “The project is especially vital to future teachers because it enables students who will be working with 21st century learners to use the most modern technology.”
