Respondus LockDown Browser Pilot

Spring/Summer 2010
Twenty online and face-to-face faculty will pilot the use of the Respondus LockDown Browser, an Internet browser that blocks all other computer applications while a student is taking an online quiz, test, or exam.  (more information)

Nursing iTouch Pilot

Fall 2009/Spring 2010
In partnership with the nursing department, Instructional Technology Services purchased apps and provided instructional support for the use of 12 iTouches acquired by the nursing department by grant.   (more information)

Health Sciences Mobile Device  Pilot

In partnership with the Health Science discipline, the Office of Information Technology provided faculty with an iPad or iPod Touch, first-year students with an iPod Touch, and second-year students with an iPad.  (more information)

Student Media Projects

Instructional Technology Services and Media Developer, Garrett DeHart, teamed with Honors Political Science Instructor, Tamra Ortgies-Young, to assist her spring 2010 political science students with the creation of a video depicting a concept in American Government.  (more information)

Respondus LockDown Browser Pilot

Spring 2010/Summer 2010

Approximately 20 Online and Face-to-Face faculty will be piloting the use of the Respondus LockDown Browser during summer 2010.
The Respondus LockDown Browser works in conjunction with iCollege assessments (quizzes, tests, and exams). An instructor can choose which of their assessments requires students to use the Respondus LockDown Browser. If an assessment requires the use of the Respondus LockDown Browser, the student must download (for free) and install the special browser. The student must then login to iCollege using the Respondus LockDown Browser (not Internet Explorer, FireFox, or Safari) and complete the assessment. The Respondus LockDown Browser will prevent the student from running other applications such as a web browser, Outlook, Word, PowerPoint, etc while taking the assessment.
During the pilot, both faculty and students will be asked to complete surveys regarding their experiences using the Respondus LockDown Browser.

Update Fall 2010

The pilot ended in July 2010. On August 3, 2010, the pilot group met and decided to continue licensing Respondus LockDown Browser. GPC Online will be discussing with its department chairs how it should be used in online classes-- which testing situations are most appropriate. The Respondus LockDown Browser will be made available for on campus testing in the labs and computer classrooms.

Nursing iTouch Pilot Project

Fall 2009-Spring 2010

The Nursing iTouch Pilot Project began in the Fall of 2009. It is a partnership between the nursing department and Instructional Technology Services. The GPC Nursing Department received a grant that would allow for 12 iTouches to be purchased and loaned to nursing students and faculty.
Instructional Technology Services purchased licenses for the Unbound Medicine App, Nursing Central. The app was loaded on the iTouches. Additionally, Instructional Technology Services worked with the nursing department to make their lectures and lecture notes available to students as podcasts viewable on the iTouch.

Given the success of this pilot as indicated in student surveys and activity logs, a new, broader pilot that includes Nursing and Dental Hygiene is underway for the Fall 2010 semester.

Health Science Mobile Device Pilot

The Health Science Mobile Device Pilot Project will begin in Fall 2010. It is a partnership between the Health Science discipline and the Office of Information Technology. Faculty teaching in the Health Sciences will receive a iPad or iPod Touch. First year Health Science students will receive an iPod Touch. Second year Health Science students will receive an iPad. Discipline specific apps such as Unbound Medicine's Nursing Central app will be provided to the faculty and students. Faculty will be creating podcasts of lectures and skills labs for students to view.
Through the implementation of the Health Science Mobile Device Pilot we will:
  • Develop strategies to convey information utilizing various electronically based applications while providing engaging and powerful learning experiences, content, and resources applicable to the health science student.
  • Provide students with mobile, electronic devices, utilizing the power of technology to reach all learners anytime and anywhere.
  • Develop podcasts and webinar content to customize learning opportunities utilizing  mobile devices.
  • Adopt discipline specific web-based applications for health science courses.
  • Explore the impact of enhanced technology on student learning.
  • Evaluate student perceptions and practices through use of pre and post student surveys.
  • Assess student utilization of electronically based applications.
  • Assess student impressions of electronically based applications and mobile devices collected from Student logs
  • Evaluate the impact of additional technology on faculty practices and perceptions.
  • Compare faculty perceptions and practices between Nursing and Dental Hygiene utilizing pre and post surveys.
  • Assess faculty utilization of technology enabled instruction.
  • Evaluate student outcomes comparing technology enabled instruction vs. face-to-face web enhanced instruction
  • Comparison of course exam grades.

Student Media Projects

Spring 2010

Instructional Technology Services and Media Developer, Garrett DeHart, teamed with Honors Political Science Instructor, Tamra Ortgies-Young,to assist her spring 2010 political science students with the creation of a video depicting a concept in American Government.
Ortgies-Young's Honors Political Sciences students were divided into 5 teams of 3 students. Each team was given a topic such as Federalism and asked to create a 4-5 minute video. The completed videos will be placed on the Internet for future GPC Political Science students to enjoy as well as anyone who has an interest.
Instructional Technology Services and the Media Developer provided in-class training on filming and lighting basics, how to use iMovie, and general support/guidance. Student teams were also provided with a Flip Video Camera and access to a Macbook Pro laptop, lighting kits, and green screens.
Ortgies-Young, Instructional Technology Services, and the Media Developer collaborated on the design of the project including what deliverables (mini-paper, script, etc.) would be required.
Student videos can be viewed online.
This project will be continued in Fall 2010 by Adam Stone.

Summer 2010

A similar student media project to the one described above was completed in an Education course "Exploring Socio-Cultural Perspectives" taught by Mary Mattson during the summer 2010 semester. Please contact Mary Mattson for details on this project.

Fall 2010

In fall semester, Honors Political Science instructor, Adam Stone will continue the Student Media Project started by Tamra Ortgies- Young. This will help to build a library of student created American Government videos available to all GPC students.

The Future of Student Media Projects

Future student media projects will be supported through Instructional Technology Services, the new Student Media Labs and the new Digital Media Coordinator. Contact an Instructional Technologist if you would like to design a student media project. Your Instructional Technologist can provide recommendations on the instructional design and technical design of your project.
