Holcombe receives sportsmanship award

Georgia Perimeter College men's basketball freshman, Jacquiese Holcombe, received the 2006 National Junior College Athletic Association Charles Sesher Sportsmanship Award announced at the national tournament last weekend in Hutchinson, Kansas.

“It feels good to receive this honor,” said Holcombe. “I didn’t expect to get it, but I guess it came with helping the team.”

Holcombe, a first team All-Region selection, led the Jaguars this season with 11.3 points per game and 6.5 rebounds per game. 

The Sesher Award was initiated in 1966 and is presented annually to the player demonstrating the best sportsmanship throughout the NJCAA national tournament.

                                                Georgia Perimeter falls in quarterfinals

In their second National Junior College Athletic Association national tournament appearance in three years, the Georgia Perimeter College Jaguars finished 12th, falling 78-70 to Southwest Illinois in the quarterfinals last Thursday in Hutchinson, Kansas.

“We showed a lot of character,” said GPC head coach Alfred Barney. “I hope we can learn from this experience.”

The Jaguars (29-8) trailed most of the way and struggled offensively. GPC’s offense went cold in the final sit minutes before the half, hitting only one field goal and two free throws. Southwest Illinois finished on a 16-4 run to claim a 39-26 halftime lead.

Southwest Illinois (34-4) also scored 17 of the first 25 points in the second half, putting the Blue Storm ahead 56-34. Georgia Perimeter used its full-court pressure defense to cut the lead to 10 points with eight minutes remaining, but missed opportunities hurt the Jaguars down the stretch.

“We did not shoot the ball well and could not convert on offense,” said Barney.

After wearing down Williston State (North Dakota) 90-80 in the first round game, the Jaguars were handled by eventual national champion University of Arkansas- Fort Smith 67-54 in round two. 

Marques Washington and Jacolby Davis scored 10 points each and Fred Brathwaite added nine points and four rebounds for the Jaguars.

GPC’s bench outscored its opponents 93-21 in the tournament.

Jacquiese Holcombe led five Jaguars in double-digits against Williston State with a team-high 17 points. Washington chipped in (16), Satarvis Billings (14), Brathwaite (13), Javarus Stewart (13) and Jay Brown (10).

The Jaguars will look to the 10 returning players for leadership next season.

Georgia Perimeter advances to the national tournament

For the first time in school history, the Georgia Perimeter College men and women’s basketball teams have earned berths in the National Junior College Athletic Association Division I national tournaments in the same year, winning their respective district championships on Saturday, Mar.11.

In the first round, the No. 16 seed Lady Jaguars (21-9) will face No.1 seed Central Arizona College on Tuesday, Mar. 21, at 4:00 p.m. in Salina, Kansas. Central Arizona (28-0) is the reigning national champion.

This will be the second consecutive appearance in the national tournament for the Lady Jaguars, who topped No.12 Louisburg College 57-47 on the road in the NJCAA district championship.

”This team has played with the heart of champions,” said head coach James Waldon.

Sophomores Brittany Baity, Shantrelle Matthews and Anikia Jawara have carried the Lady Jaguars this season. Baity ranks second in the nation with 8.1 assists per game.  Matthews leads the Jaguars in scoring for the second consecutive year with 12.8 points per game. Jawara leads the team in rebounding with 9.3 rebounds per game and is second in scoring with 12.4 points per game.

The men’s basketball team will take on Williston State (North Dakota) in the first round on Tuesday, Mar. 21, at 12:00 p.m. in Hutchinson, Kansas. The Jaguars (28-6) and Williston State (20-10) are unranked, but both received votes in the NJCAA national poll.

“It feels good to have an opportunity to compete for a national championship,” said sophomore guard Javarus Stewart.

The Jaguars (28-6) upset third-ranked Shelton State at in the NJCAA District 10 championship game to earn their second trip to the national tournament in three years. In 2004, GPC advanced to the quarterfinals and finished 1-2 in the national tournament.

Head Coach Alfred Barney will take a young team consisting of 12 freshmen to the national’s in its quest for a national championship.

“I felt we had a chance to make it to the national tournament with our talent level, but we had to mature quickly and play for each other and not self,” said Barney.  “I am proud of them.”

Jacquiese Holcombe leads the team, averaging 11.3 points and 6.8 rebounds per game, followed by Satarvis Billings with 11.1 points per game and Marques Washington, Stewart and Jay Brown with nine points each.

The men and women’s basketball teams are the second and third GPC teams to compete for a national championship this season. GPC’s men’s soccer team won the national title in November.

Jaguars knock off South Georgia Tech for championship

It was the same time, the same place, the same opponents, but a different outcome for the Georgia Junior College Athletic Association Region XVII conference tournament championship match-up, featuring the No. 1 and No. 2 teams in the conference.

In an overtime thriller, Georgia Perimeter College knocked off defending champion South Georgia Technical College 65-61 to capture the conference tournament championship Saturday in Americus, Georgia.

“Our guys played with a lot of poise and determination when we needed it,” said GPC head coach Alfred Barney.

From the tip-off it was an intense battle with eight lead changes, five ties and a 27-27 tie at halftime. The first half was evenly matched, and neither team held more than a four-point lead.

With eight minutes remaining in the game, the Jets opened a seven-point lead, its largest of the game. Georgia Perimeter clawed its way back with a 13-6 run and Fred Braithwaite’s three-pointer to tie the game at 59-59 with 34 seconds on the clock.

South Georgia Tech had an opportunity to win the game in regulation, but missed the front end of an  one and one with four seconds remaining.

The Jaguars held South Georgia Tech scoreless for the last three minutes of the overtime period. Marques Washington scored four of the Jaguars' six points in the overtime period, including a dunk with seconds remaining to seal the victory.

"The crowd motivated us," said tournament MVP Satarvis Billings.

Billings and Jay Brown led the Jaguars in scoring with 11 points each. Brown also connected on all seven free throw attempts. Jaquiese Holcombe added nine points and Washingtion, Stewart and Brathwaite chipped in seven points each.

The stage was set Friday night after the Jaguars defeated Coastal Georgia 92-78 in the semifinal match-up. Billings exploded on offense against the Mariners with 22 points in the first half and finished with a career-high 24 points. Stewart and Washington added 19 points and 15 points, respectively.

Stewart was also named to the All-Tournament team, along with Billings. GPC finished the season 27-6 overall and 9-3 in the conference.

The Jaguars will host the winner of the Alabama state championship for the district 10 title and the right to compete in the national tournament in Hutchinson, Kansas Saturday, Mar. 11, 7 p.m. at the Decatur campus gymnasium

GPC dominates Coastal Georgia in semifinals

Freshman Satarvis Billings led GPC with a career-high 24 points as the Jaguars crushed Coastal Georgia 92-78 in the semifinals of the Georgia Junior College Athletic Association conference tournament Friday in Americus, GA

In a rematch of last year's conference championship, the Jaguars will seek revenge against the South Georgia Technical College Jets Saturday, Mar. 4, in the championship game.

Georgia Perimeter advances to semifinal

Sophomore guard Javarus Stewart led Georgia Perimeter College past Truett-McConnell College 96-73 with a career-high 21 points in the first round of the Georgia Junior College Athletic Association Region XVII conference tournament Tuesday.

The Jaguars’ Jay Brown and Jacolby Davis chipped in 13 and 10 points, respectively.

GPC will face Coastal Georgia Community College in the semifinal game Friday, March 3, 6:00 p.m. in Americus, Georgia.

                                     Atlanta Metro tops GPC in overtime

With five seconds remaining in the overtime period, Darryl Slack hit one of two free throws that pushed Atlanta Metro past Georgia Perimeter College 85-84 Wednesday.

Atlanta Metro jumped out early on GPC, opening a 23-8 lead at the 10-minute mark. GPC shot 27 percent from the floor and 30 percent from the free throw line in the first half and trailed 45-27 at the break.

In the second half, Atlanta Metro led by as many as 18 points, but the Jaguars climbed their way back on a steal and basket by Satarvis Billings that tied the game at 58 with 7:32 remaining. GPC took a 66-60 lead into the final five minutes, but Atlanta Metro cut the deficit to one-point, 74-73, with 35 seconds left.

After GPC missed one of two free throws, Slack hit a jumper at the buzzer to tie the game in regulation. 

Billings led GPC with 17 points and three rebounds followed by Jairocey Simpson with 16 points and four rebounds and Marques Washington with 13 points.

The overtime period provided five lead changes and two ties with every possession critical for each team. With 1.3 seconds remaining, GPC’s field goal attempt fell short as time ran down.

Scott Edwards scored a game-high 34 points for the Panthers while Brian Carlyle added 13 points and nine rebounds.

The Jaguars connected on 15-of-31 free throw attempts and hit only seven of 19 three-pointers.

Georgia Perimeter finished second in the GJCAA conference with a 9-3 conference record and 24-6 overall. The Jaguars will host Truett-McConnell College in the first round of the conference tournament Tuesday, Feb. 28, 7:30 p.m. at the Decatur campus gymnasium.

GPC to host Abraham Baldwin

The Georgia Perimeter College men’s basketball team hosts a critical conference match-up against Abraham Baldwin Agricultural College, Saturday, Feb. 18, at 4:00 p.m. in Decatur, Georgia.

In their previous meeting Jan. 21, the Stallions defeated GPC 93-90 in overtime. Georgia Perimeter will have to do a better job on the free throw line where they shot 50 percent (23-of-43) in the first game. The Jaguars, who are in a two-way tie for first place in the conference at 8-2 and with ABAC in third place at 6-2, must win their final two conference games. At stake is home court advantage in the regional tournament, March 3-4, which the regular season winner gets to host.

GPC gets road win over Middle Georgia 

Sophomore guard Javarus Stewart led six Jaguars in double-digits with 16 points as Georgia Perimeter College demolished Middle Georgia College 103-82 on the road in conference action Saturday.

Stewart, who shot six of nine from the field, was perfect on four attempts at the free throw line and pulled down eight rebounds. GPC’s Fred Brathwaite finished with14 points, eight rebounds and four assists, Jay Brown added 14 points, Jacolby Davis chipped in 13 points and Jairocey Simson contributed 11 points and nine rebounds.

As a team, the Jaguars dominated Middle Georgia on the boards 49 to 29 and shot 71 percent from the free throw line.

Georgia Perimeter led by 10 points, 54-44, at the break and maintained the lead throughout the second half. 

Austin Royal led the Warriors with a game-high 23 points and four rebounds.

Next, GPC will travel to meet Truett-McConnell College Tuesday, Feb. 14, at 7:30 p.m., before hosting ABAC on Saturday, Feb. 22, at 4:00 p.m.

GPC stumbles against South Georgia Tech

South Georgia Technical College fought off a late second half comeback effort by the Jaguars as the Jets held on for a 63-59 win over Georgia Perimeter College Wednesday.

The Jets’ James Perry opened the second half with two consecutive three-pointers and extended the Jets 27-23 halftime lead to 10 points. South Georgia Tech led by as many as 18 points, before Satarvis Billings and Victor Stowes helped GPC orchestrate its own 21-5 run with nine minutes remaining, scoring a combined 16 points, including four three-point field goals.

GPC cut the deficit to two points with 1:43 left on the clock, but fell short in the end with only one basket down the stretch.

South Georgia Tech led throughout the game and maintained a four-point lead in the first half before GPC tied it at 23 with one minute remaining. The Jaguars did not find its offensive rhythm until late in the second half, missing all seven three-point attempts and shooting only 34 percent in the first half.

Stowes led Georgia Perimeter with 12 points on four-of-seven shooting from the field and Billings added 11 points and three assists.

Perry led all scorers with 26 points and Emanuel Wimbush finished with 14 points and seven rebounds

With four conference games remaining, the loss puts GPC tied in first place with South Georgia Tech at 6-2.

The Jaguars (21-5, 6-2) will be on the road for their next games, Saturday, Feb. 11, against Middle Georgia College and Tuesday, Feb. 14, against Truett-McConnell. Both games are scheduled to tip-off at 7:30 p.m.

Jaguars win cross-city battle against Atlanta Metro

After a slow start in the first half, Georgia Perimeter College found its rhythm, defeating Atlanta Metro College 93-75 on the road Wednesday.

The Panthers led by as many as eight points in the first half, before GPC opened a 45-28 halftime lead.

Satarvis Billings led the Jaguars with 13 points followed by Fred Brathwaite and Javarus Stewart with 12 points each and Victor Stowes 10 points. Marques Washington and Stephen Fox grabbed seven rebounds.

Atlanta Metro’s Courtney George led the team with 15 points and LeKeves Prather added 14 points.

The Jaguars (18-4, 4-1) will host Oxford College Saturday, Jan. 28, 3:00 p.m., before hosting Middle Georgia next Wednesday, Feb. 1, at 7:30 p.m.

Georgia Perimeter shatters Truett-McConnell in conference win

In an extended regulation game, Georgia Perimeter College came away with an 84-58 conference victory over Truett-McConnell at home Tuesday.

After an hour and 30 minute delay in the first half to repair a backboard that was shattered when two GPC players inadvertently dunked the ball at the same time, the Jaguars opened a 37-14 halftime lead and never looked back.

Jacquiese Holcombe, Georgia Perimeter’s leading scorer, led the Jaguars with 23 points, shooting 82 percent (9-of-11) from the floor and 100 percent from the free-throw line.  Also contributing for the Jaguars were Jacolby Davis with 14 points and six rebounds, Fred Brathwaite with 11 points and eight rebounds, Satarvis Billings with 11 points and Jay Brown with a team-high 10 rebounds.

Despite scoring 44 points in the second half, GPC’s deficit was too much for the Bears to overcome. Derrick King led the way for Truett with 11 of his 21 points in the second half. King also added a game-high 18 rebounds.

GPC extends its record to 17-3 overall and 3-0 in the conference and will travel to Tifton, Georgia, for a 4:00 p.m. conference match-up against Abraham Baldwin Agricultural College, Saturday, Jan. 21.

Jaguars squeeze past South Georgia Tech

Georgia Perimeter College’s Jay Brown sank two free throws with four seconds remaining in the game to give the Jaguars a 74-73 victory over South Georgia Technical College in conference action on the road Wednesday. 

The No. 20-ranked Jaguars (15-3, 1-0) found themselves down 71-61 with five minutes remaining, before they put together a 9-0 run and cut the Jets’ deficit to one point. It came down to free-throw shooting for both teams in the final minute. Along with Brown, Jairocey Simpson hit two key free throws down the stretch.

Brown led Georgia Perimeter with 11 points while Fred Brathwaite and Simpson  contributed 10 points each. 

James Perry led all scorers with 18 points for the Jets. 

The Jaguars will host conference opponent Coastal Georgia Saturday, Jan. 14, at 3:00 p.m. on GPC’s Decatur campus.

Georgia Perimeter gears up for conference season

 In preparation for the Georgia Junior College Athletic Association Region XVII conference season, Georgia Perimeter College cruised past North Atlanta Prep School 109-71 Saturday.

Georgia Perimeter (14-3), picked to finish second in the GJCAA, begins conference play Wednesday, Jan. 11, on the road against South Georgia Technical College. 

The Jaguars finished second in the conference tournament last season, losing to South Georgia Tech in the championship game. With only two players from last year’s squad and a host of freshmen to make this year’s run, GPC faces a challenge.

North Atlanta, led by Charles Wynn with 17 points, could not overcome a 62-30 halftime deficit, despite being outscored by only six points in the second half.

GPC’s Jay Brown led all scorers with his season-high 18 points on 8-of-13 shooting. Five other Jaguars scored in double digits, including Javarus Stewart (16), Jacolby Davis (13), Jacquiese Holcombe (11), Marques Washington (10) and Fred Brathwaite (10).

The Jaguars will host conference opponent Coastal Georgia Saturday, Jan. 14, at 3:00 p.m. on GPC’s Decatur campus.

Georgia Perimeter wins tournament

Fred Brathwaite’s 24 points per game helped Georgia Perimeter College win the College of Southern Maryland Tournament in LaPlata, Md., with victories over CCBC-Essex, 110-91, Friday and the College of Southern Maryland, 73-70, Saturday.

Brathwaite, the tournament’s most valuable player, led GPC with 25 points against the College of Southern Maryland. Jacquiese Holcombe and Brathwaite led the Jaguars over CCBC- Essex with 23 and 24 points, respectively.

GPC’s Satarvis Billings was also named to the All-Tournament team. 

The Jaguars (12-2) will travel to Panama City, FL, and compete in the Gulf Coast Community College Christmas Tournament, Dec. 28-29.

The Jaguars move up two spots to No. 6

Decatur, GA - Georgia Perimeter College moved up two spots to No. 6 in the latest National Junior College Athletic Association men’s basketball poll released November 30.

The Jaguars (7-0), ranked No. 24 in the preseason poll, moved to the sixth spot in last week’s poll after beating Clinton College, the College of Southern Maryland and Southern Union State Community College.

Georgia Perimeter escapes with victory over Spartanburg

Spartanburg, SC - Spartanburg Methodist College gave sixth-ranked Georgia Perimeter College its first scare of the season, but the Jaguars remained undefeated, edging the Pioneers 92-91, Tuesday at Spartanburg, SC

With five minutes remaining in the game, Spartanburg Methodist opened a 77-70 lead over the Jaguars. Phillip Buckson led the Pioneers during the run, scoring 10 of his game-high 24 points.

But it was the hot hand of sophomore Javarus Stewart, who scored seven points down the stretch, including a three-pointer to give GPC an 87-85 lead at the 1:35 mark.  Stewart, who finished with 16 points, also sanked two huge free throws with 10 seconds left that sealed the victory.

After GPC missed the next two free throw attempts, a three-point buzzer-beater fell short for the Pioneers.

Four other Jaguars scored in double figures including, GPC’s leading scorer, Jacquiese Holcombe (18), Marques Washington (10), Brody Langston (14) and Jay Brown (10).

For the Pioneers, Terrance Grier added 14 points and Jarvis Jackson and Jamal Brooks chipped in 11 and 10, respectively.

Georgia Perimeter will visit Southern Union State Community College, Saturday, Dec. 3, at 7 p.m. for its second stop on a three-game road trip. The Jaguars host Spartanburg at home Friday, Dec. 9, at 7:30 p.m.

GPC wins Homecoming game with a lift off the bench

Decatur, GA -Georgia Perimeter College scored 51 points off the bench, led by Marques Washington (15), Javarus Stewart (14) and Keldrick Coleman (12) in its 91-74 Homecoming victory over Aiken Technical College Tuesday.

Washington, who made six of12 shots from the field and three of three from the free throw line, also pulled down a team-high 10 rebounds. Stewart shot two of four from the behind the arc for six of his 14 points. Coleman also grabbed nine rebounds, including seven off the offensive boards. Combined, the trio hit nine of 10 free throws.

The Jaguars (4-0) took a 48-32 lead into halftime after a slow start by both teams. Shannon Behling led Aiken (2-1) on a 29-12 run in the second half, which gave the Knights a 61-60 lead with 9:24 remaining. Georgia Perimeter responded with a run of its own, leading to a 17-point victory.

Jacquiese Holcombe, who scored the Jaguars’ first seven points, finished with 12 points and 10 rebounds. Jay Brown also chipped in 11 points and seven rebounds.

For the Knights, Corey Johnson had a game-high 20 points and Tavaris Little added 11 points. Behling also had a game-high 11 rebounds

Georgia Perimeter will host its annual Thanksgiving Classic, Nov. 18 and 19, at 5:30 p.m. and 7:30 p.m. on the Decatur campus.  The first game will feature Atlanta Metro vs. Southern Union at 5:30 p.m. In the second game, GPC will take on the College of Southern Maryland at 7:30 p.m.

GPC wins its season opener

Decatur, GA -With a team consisting of 13 freshmen, the Georgia Perimeter College men’s basketball team looked impressive in its season opener with a 90-79 victory over Clinton Junior College Tuesday.

Ranked No. 24 in the National Junior College Athletic Association preseason poll, the Jaguars lead the series 3-0 between the two schools.

After trailing by two points at halftime, Georgia Perimeter (1-0) jumped out early on the Golden Bears, scoring 27 points off turnovers and outrebounding Clinton College 27-12 in the second half.

It was a balanced attack for the Jaguars, with six players scoring in double figures led by Stephen Fox, Marques Washington and Satarvis Billings, who scored 12 points each, and Jacquiese Holcombe (10 points), Keldrick Coleman (10 points) and Jay Brown (11 points).

Fox pulled down six rebounds, while Coleman and Washington added five boards each for GPC. 

Michael Puckett and Derrick Wilson led Clinton College (1-0) with 18 points and 16 points respectively.

The Jaguars will face North Atlanta Prep, Tuesday, Nov. 8, at 7:30 p.m. on GPC’s Decatur campus.
