Alfred Barney
Head Coach

Head Coach Alfred Barney returns for his 12th season as head coach of the men’s basketball program and heads into the 2007-2008 campaign with his team ranked No. 16 nationally. Last season, Barney guided the Jaguars to 27 wins and their eighth conference tournament championship and sixth national tournament appearance. The Jaguars will be seeking their third consecutive Georgia Junior College Athletic Association championship and third consecutive National Junior College Athletic Association tournament appearance. Barney, known as an outstanding teacher and recruiter, heads into the 2007-2008 campaign with a variety of talented athletes, who look forward to continuing the Georgia Perimeter College winning tradition.

A native of Pelham, Georgia, and a graduate of Pelham High School, Barney was an All Conference and All State performer in basketball, football, and baseball.  In addition, he garnered such accolades as M.V.P., Best Offensive, and Hustle Award.

            Entering Abraham Baldwin College in Tifton, Ga., following high school, Barney continued his academic and basketball career.  After a successful stint at ABAC, earning his associate degree and being named the team’s M.V.P. , Barney was awarded a scholarship to Austin Peay State University in Clarksville, Tennessee.

Barney played two seasons for the Governors, lettering in 1977-78 and 1978-79.  In his final season at Austin Peay in 1979 Barney was named to the Ohio Valley All-Conference team, All-Academic team, and he was also the team’s M.V.P.  After graduating from Austin Peay with a bachelors of science in sociology, Barney remained to work toward his master’s degree.  In 1981, Barney graduated with a Master of Science in Administration.

            Barney received his first coaching position in 1982, returning to Pelham High School as the men’s basketball team coach.  In Barney’s two seasons as head coach, Pelham was an impressive 38-18.

            In 1984, Barney became an assistant coach at Georgia Southwestern State University.  Serving as an assistant, the Hurricanes enjoyed their finest season, compiling a 28-5 record and earning an N.A.I.A. national tournament invitation.  The Hurricanes were 112-51 during Barney’s four years at Georgia Southwestern.

            Barney was named the Head Basketball Coach for Tuskegee University in Tuskegee, Al. Barney coached at Tuskegee for four years before being named associate coach at Dekalb College in 1992 and head coach in 1996. During his tenure, Barney has recorded 281 wins and 94 losses and has transformed the men’s basketball program into a national powerhouse with eight GJCAA tournament championships and six NJCAA National Tournament appearances, including a final four finish in 2002-2003.

During his tenure at the college Barney has won numerous awards, including NJCAA Region XVII Coach of the Year, NJCAA District X Coach of the Year, Naismith Junior College Coach of the Year and the Atlanta Tip-Off Club Coach of the Year. Barney was also inducted into the Mitchell County (Georgia) Sports Hall of Fame in 2000.

Barney is married to the former Lois Grubbs.  He and his wife reside in Conyers, Ga. With their three daughters, Olivia(23), Tiffany(19), and LaKaitlen(10.

            Coach Barney would like to recognize his parents, Flamon and Betty Barney.  He would like to make special recognition of his grandmother, Gloria B. Hill, and his stepmother Lavone Barney, for their love and support throughout his career.


David Dennis
Associate Coach

David Dennis enters his sixth season on Alfred Barney's coaching staff. Dennis previously served under Barney as an assistant coach for four years at Tuskegee University. He was also a volunteer assistant under Randolph Barksdale in 1992 at DeKalb College.

Dennis was born in Detroit, Michigan and attended Detroit Benedictine High School. After a highly decorated prep career in basketball, football and track, Dennis attended Kalamazoo Valley Community College.

While at Kalamazoo Dennis was named second team All-Conference, first team All-Region and first team All-Defense. He was also voted Most Improved Player by his teammates as he helped lead Kalamazoo to a 21-6 record and a spot in the regional semifinals.
