Alfred BarneyHead Coach Head Coach Alfred Barney begins his seventh season as the head men's basketball coach at Georgia Perimeter College. A native of Pelham, Georgia, and a graduate of Pelham High School, Barney was an All-Conference and All-State performer in basketball, football and baseball. He entered Abraham Baldwin College (ABAC) in Tifton, Georgia, after high school to continue his basketball and academic careers. After a successful stint at ABAC, earning his associate degree and being named the team's MVP, Barney was awarded a scholarship to Austin Peay State University. Barney played two seasons for the Governors and was named to the Ohio Valley All-Conference team, All-Academic team and was named team MVP as a senior. Barney remained at Austin Peay for his first coaching position, serving as a graduate assistant. Barney's first head coaching position came in 1982, returning to Pelham High School as the men's basketball coach. In 1984 Barney became an assistant coach at Georgia Southwestern State University. In his first year as an assistant, the Hurricanes enjoyed one of their finest seasons, compiling a 28-5 record and earning an NAIA National Tournament invitation. The Hurricanes were 112-51 during Barney's four years at the school. Barney was named head coach at Tuskegee University in Tuskegee, Alabama, in 1988. Barney remained at Tuskegee for four years, before being named associate coach at DeKalb (now Georgia Perimeter) College in 1992 and then head coach in 1996. Barney wasted little time transforming the Georgia Perimeter program into a powerhouse, advancing to the national tournament in his second year as head coach. In 1998, the Jaguars finished 31-2 overall and 12-0 in the Georgia Junior College Athletic Association. The squad won the conference regular season and tournament championships, and were ranked as high as No. 3 nationally. During his tenure at the college Barney has won numerous awards, including NJCAA Region XVII Coach of the Year, NJCAA District X Coach of the Year and Atlanta Tip-Off Club Coach of the Year. Barney was also inducted into the Mitchell County (Georgia) Sports Hall of Fame in 2000. Barney is married to the former Lois Grubbs. They have three daughters, Olivia, Tiffany and LaKaiten and reside in Conyers, Georgia.
