Earl Calloway signs with Indiana

Decatur, GA – The men’s basketball program at Georgia Perimeter College announced, Tuesday, April 26, the signing of sophomore Earl Calloway to Indiana University, where he will play for head coach Mike Davis and the Hoosiers next season.

Calloway, a 6-3 guard from Westlake High School in College Park, Georgia, played one season at GPC and was instrumental in the team’s success this year.  He helped lead the Jaguars to a 23-7 record and second place in the regular season and Georgia Junior College Athletic Association conference tournament standings.

He was the team’s second leading scorer, averaging 18 points, 4.8 assists and five steals per game. Calloway was second in the GJCAA conference in overall field goal percentage, shooting 67 percent from the floor, and among the leaders in free throw percentage (77 percent) and three-point field percentage (44 percent).

Recently, he was chosen as a National Junior College Athletic Association All-America honorable mention selection and named to the GJCAA All-Region and All-Tournament first teams.

“This is a great move for Earl,” said GPC head coach Alfred Barney.

Calloway is the only junior college recruit at Indiana in the men's basketball program under the direction of Davis.

Calloway is the third Jaguar to sign with a major university this season. Earlier in the season, guard Ravone George signed with the University of Alabama and forward Brian Epps signed with Southern Methodist University.

South Georgia Tech ends Georgia Perimeter’s title streak

The Georgia Perimeter College men’s basketball team’s hopes of a third consecutive conference championship ended Saturday as the Jaguars fell 77-67 to South Georgia Technical College in the title game of the Region XVII Georgia Junior College Athletic Association conference in Americus, Georgia.

South Georgia Tech (24-6) opened a 20-8 lead nine minutes into the game on a basket by Wayne Williams, who scored a game-high 23 points.

After a trio of South Georgia Tech turnovers and two GPC steals, the Jaguars went on an 8-0 run and tied the score 23-23 at the 6:50 mark.  The Jets managed to take a four-point 38-34 lead into halftime.

The second half was a grueling battle, with the Jets leading most of the way and Georgia Perimeter pulling within two points with 10 minutes remaining. After GPC’s leader Earl Calloway (Westlake High School) went to the bench with an injury, the Jaguars could not regroup.  They fought hard to get the momentum to swing in their favor, but South Georgia Tech pulled away down the stretch.

The Jets outrebounded GPC 52-40 and held the Jaguars to 31 percent (22-of-71) shooting from the field.

Brian Epps (Milwaukee, Wis.) scored 16 points on 5-of-19 from the floor and grabbed seven rebounds, while Chauncey Hall (Americus, GA) recorded a double double with 13 points and 10 rebounds. Calloway finished with 12 points and Ravone George (Southwest Dekalb High School) added 11 points and three assists.

Georgia Perimeter (23-7) earned a spot in the championship game after defeating Middle Georgia College 72-65 in the semifinal game Friday. Calloway led the team in scoring with 16 points and carried the Jaguars all the way to the title game.

Calloway, who averaged 14 points and Epps, who averaged 13 points and nine rebounds in the two games were named to the all-tournament team. The squad finished second in the GJCAA conference.

But that was as close as the Panthers would come to leading and GPC pulled away down the stretch.

The Jaguars shot 86 percent (25-of-29) from the charity stripe, while Atlanta Metro hit 57 percent (20-of-35) of its free throws.  GPC edged the Panthers in rebounding 32-20.
