| 2004-2005 ScheduleMarch 25, 2005Lady Jaguars come up short in Kansas Two consecutive losses resulted in an early exit for the Georgia Perimeter College women’s basketball team in the National Junior College Athletic Association national championship tournament in Salina, Kansas. Moberly Area Community College (28-6) handed GPC its second loss 71-57 Wednesday in the consolation game of the double-elimination tournament. The Lady Jaguars trailed most of the game and found themselves down 39-23 at halftime. Freshman guard Shantrelle Matthews led the Jaguars in scoring with 18 points, shooting 7-of-9 from the field and 4-of-5 from the behind the arc. Brittany Baity added 11 points and Kim Abdullah finished with 10 points. Georgia Perimeter (26-5) dropped to the consolation bracket after its first round loss to Western Nebraska Community College 77-67. Baity and Matthews carried the Lady Jaguars with 16 points each. The twosome combined for 32 points, 10 rebounds, nine assists and six steals in the losing effort. Nikki Robinson added 15 points and seven rebounds. It was a history-making season for the Georgia Perimeter College women’s basketball team, which earned its first trip to the NJCAA national championship tournament. The Jaguars finished the regular season ranked no. 22 in the nation and first in the Georgia Junior College Athletic Association. -GPC- March 14, 2005Robinson carries Lady Jaguars to first NJCAA national tournamentWhen they needed leadership, the Lady Jaguars looked to 6-2 sophomore Nikki Robinson (Swainsboro H.S.), who was the driving force behind Georgia Perimeter’s 85-60 victory over Louisburg Saturday for the National Junior College Athletic Association District 10 championship on GPC’s Decatur campus. The victory gives the Georgia Perimeter women’s basketball program its first trip to the NJCAA national championship tournament. After a slow start in the first half, Robinson finished with a game-high 21points including 15 in the second half and 12 rebounds. “At halftime my coach and my teammates told me to go to work and that got me motivated in the second half, “Robinson said. “I thought she stepped up and played big,” said GPC head coach James Waldon. “I challenged her at halftime and she brought it. Georgia Perimeter (26-3) led the entire game and it was lights out early for Louisburg, which trailed 44-29 at halftime. In the second half, Georgia Perimeter got off to an early 20-7 run, leading 62-36, with Robinson scoring 10 points during the stretch. GPC led by as many as 27 points in the half and pulled away from the Lady Hurricanes, who finish the season 20-4. Four other Lady Jaguars scored in double digits including Kim Abdullah (Alief Hastings H.S.) with 14 points, Shantrelle Matthews (North Atlanta H.S.) with 12 points and Brittany Baity (Riverdale H.S.) with 10 points. Georgia Perimeter also got a lift off the bench from Chole Jones (Mays H.S.) and Anikia Jawara (North Atlanta H.S.), who combined for 16 points, seven rebounds, eight assists and four steals. It was pure elation for the Lady Jaguars and their coaching staff to reach the national championships for the first time in school history. “We have been working at this thing for seven year and to finally do it means a lot,” Waldon said. The Lady Jaguars will play in the NJCAA national championship tournament in Salina, Kansas, March 22-26, representing District 10. -GPC- March 7, 2005Lady Jaguars win GJCAA championshipThe Georgia Perimeter College women’s basketball team finished strong and captured the Georgia Junior College Athletic Association region XVII championship Saturday in Albany, Georgia, with a 74-59 routing of Middle Georgia College. The first half was a see-saw battle with five lead changes and six ties. Neither team had a more than a four-point lead during the half with Middle Georgia taking a 26-25 lead into halftime. Georgia Perimeter (25-3) opened a 37-26 lead early in the second half on a 10-0 run, led by Kim Abdullah (Alief Hastings High School), who scored six points during the stretch. After a Middle Georgia timeout at the 17-minute mark, the Warriors answered with their own 12-3 run to cut the deficit to two points 40-38. Tosha Ransom led Middle Georgia with a game-high 19 points. A three-point shot by Brittany Baity (Riverdale High School) gave Georgia Perimeter some breathing room and an 11-point lead 54-43 with 4:47 remaining in the game. The Jaguars held off a feisty Middle Georgia team down the stretch for the team’s second conference championship in four years. The Lady Jaguars had three players in double figures including Abullah and Nikki Robinson (Swainsboro High School) both with a team high 12 points and Shantrelle Matthews (North Atlanta High School) who recorded 10 points and four assists. Baity finished with a game-high 11 assists and Anikia Jawara pulled down seven rebounds. Georgia Perimeter shot 44 percent from the floor while holding Middle Georgia to 36 percent. In the semifinal game, Darton College proved to be no contest for the Lady Jaguars as they topple the host Cavaliers 95-53. GPC’s bench came ready to play as it scored 45 points for the Lady Jaguars behind Linda Emeghebo’s (Westside High School) 10 points and five rebounds and Erica Knox’s (Douglas High School) 10 points, three rebounds and four assists. Chloe Jones (Mays High School) and Anikia Jawara (North Atlanta High School) chipped in seven points each, while Jawara also had a team-high nine rebounds. Baity recorded a double-double with 10 points and 10 assists and Abdullah poured in a game-high 19 points and eight rebounds. Abdullah, the conference tournament most valuable player, averaged 15.5 points and 6.5 rebounds per game, while leading the team in scoring in both games. Baity and Robinson were named to the all-tournament team. Baity averaged 8.5 points and 10.5 steals. The Lady Jaguars will play Louisburg College Saturday, March 12 at 2:00 p.m., in the District 10 play-in game on GPC’s Decatur campus for the right to advance to the national championships in Salina, Kansas March 21-22. -GPC March 3, 2005 GPC’S WALDON NAMED GJCAA COACH OF THE YEAR Georgia Perimeter College head women’s basketball coach James Waldon was named the Georgia Junior College Athletic Association’s Coach of the Year for the second time during his tenure as head coach. Waldon, a Covington, GA resident, guided the no. 17 ranked Lady Jaguars to the best regular season women’s basketball record, 23-3, in school history. His squad captured the GJCAA regular season championship boasting an 11-1 record while winning 11 straight conference games. Now in his sixth season at the helm of the women’s basketball program, Waldon has an120-73 overall record and 53-17 in the GJCAA conference. In five out of six seasons, his teams have finished either first or second in the GJCAA. Waldon looks to guide this year’s team to a conference tournament championship and a trip to the National Junior Athletic Association championships in Salina, Kansas. The team will play Friday, March 4, at 5:30 p.m. in the semi-final game of the GJCAA conference tournament in Albany, GA, for the right to advance to the conference championships Saturday, March 5, at 2:00 p.m. -GPC- February 28, 2005 Robinson named national junior college player of the week Sophomore post player Nikki Robinson (Swainsboro High School) was named Division I national player of the week by the National Junior College Athletic Association for the week of February 22. Robinson has been dominating inside for the No.19 ranked Lady Jaguars averaging 15.5 points, 10 rebounds, five steals and 4.5 blocks on the week. She led the squad in victories over conference opponents Truett-McConnell Community College 86-43 and Abraham Baldwin Agricultural College 85-69. In the Truett-McConnell game, Robinson led the Lady Jaguars with 15 points, seven rebounds, four blocks and three steals. Against ABAC she recorded a double-double with 16 points, 12 rebounds and added five blocks and seven steals. Robinson is currently second in the Georgia Junior College Athletic Association Conference with 223 rebounds (8.6 avg.). GPC finished the season 23-3 overall and 11-1 in the Georgia Junior College Athletic Association Conference. The squad will look to add a conference championship to its remarkable season as they travel to Albany, Georgia, March 3-5 to compete in the GJCAA conference tournament. -GPC- February 16, 2005 Lady Jaguars win 12th consecutive game The Georgia Perimeter College women’s basketball team defeated conference opponent Truett-McConnell 86-43 Tuesday for its 12th consecutive victory. Brittany Baity (Riverdale High School) recorded a double-double with 13 points and 11 assists, while Shantrelle Matthews (North Atlanta High School) scored a game-high 19 points on 6-of-13, shooting from the field, 3-of-5 from behind the arc and 4-of-4 from the free throw line. The Lady Jaguars (20-2, 9-1 GJCAA conference) turned on the heat early and opened a 25-point 34-19 halftime lead. GPC outscored Truett-McConnell (6-19, 1-7) 52-24 in the second half and held the Danes to 29 percent shooting from the field. Nikki Robinson (Swainsboro High School) finished with 15 points and seven rebounds, Adrienne Jenkins (Habersham Central High School) was perfect from the field on 6-of-6 shooting for 13 points and Linda Emeghebo (Westside High School) added 11 points. In the last 12 games, Georgia Perimeter outscored opponents by an average of 28 points 81-53. The Lady Jaguars will take its win streak on the road Saturday against Abraham Baldwin for a 2:00 p.m. game. -GPC- February 8, 2005 Matthews lifts Georgia Perimeter over Darton College 89-68 Bouncing back from a scoreless performance in Georgia Perimeter’s previous game, freshman guard Shantrelle Matthews (North Atlanta High School), scored 21 points as the Lady Jaguars defeated Darton College 89-68 Saturday in Georgia Junior College Athletic Association conference action. Matthews, shot 7-of-13 from the field and was perfect on five free throw attempts. Nikki Robinson (Swainsboro High School) dominated the glass with a game-high 13 rebounds and 16 points, while Brittany Baity (Riverdale High School) recorded 14 points and nine assists. Adrienne Jenkins (Habersham Central High School) added 12 points and seven rebounds. The Lady Jaguars (17-2, 6-1 GJCAA) put the game away in the second half, while holding Darton to 10 field goals and outscoring the Cavaliers 48-36. The victory was Georgia Perimeter’s eighth in a row and placed the squad on top of the GJCAA conference. The squad will travel to South Georgia Tech Wednesday, Feb. 9, for a 5:30 match-up before hosting Middle Georgia College Saturday, Feb. 12, at 5:30 p.m on GPC’s Decatur campus, located at 3251 Panthersville Road. -GPC- February 3, 2005Lady Jaguars Squeezed by Middle Georgia in conference action
