How to Use the Universal Catalog and GIL Express

Search all 34 library catalogs of the University System of Georgia's public colleges and universities for library books. The combined catalogs are called the Universal Catalog (UC). After selecting your books, you can request them using GIL express. To begin, here are 3 ways to access the Universal Catalog.

  1. When your GIL@GPC (http://gil.gpc.edu) search results in no matches, you will see the following message:
Click here to execute this search in the GIL Universal Catalog. Follow this link to automatically search in the Universal Catalog.

  2. After doing a search in GPC's GIL catalog, you may want to see what other libraries own. Go to the navigation bar at the top of the screen and click on the GIL Universal Catalog link: GIL Universal Catalog

  3. You may go directly to the GIL Universal Catalog at https://giluc.usg.edu.

After you find a book in the Universal Catalog that you would like to borrow, you may use GIL Express to request it. Non-print items, reference books and course reserves cannot be checked

Follow these easy steps

  1. Click on GIL Express Request at the top of the screen: GIL Express Request You may notice that several libraries own the book you want. You can't choose which library will lend you the book. You must go through GIL Express.

  2. Fill in the online form. Use the drop-down menu to select Georgia Perimeter College, fill in your student ID number and last name, and click on Logon.

  3. On the next screen, click OK.

  4. When you arrive at the GIL Express Request screen, again enter your student ID number. Select your Pick up Library. If you select Georgia Perimeter College, also choose a campus. When using GIL Express, you may pick up and drop off your items at any USG school.

  5. Check the status of your requests by going to GIL@GPC or the Universal Catalog, and clicking on Access my GIL account to to login. You will not be notified when your items arrive at the library.

GIL Express Policies for GPC

  1. All currently enrolled students and currently employed faculty and staff at GPC are eligible for GIL Express.

  2. GPC students may place remote GIL Express requests through the Universal Catalog or go to any University System of Georgia School and check out. A valid photo ID is required. A remote GIL Express request only can be placed through the Universal Catalog.

  3. GPC students may return their items to any USG school.

  4. Overdue fines will NOT be charged for GIL Express transactions. However, a student will be blocked in Banner if they have 1 item 7 days overdue. In addition, the student is blocked at all USG schools. The block is removed only when the student returns the item or pays for the item.

  5. The statewide loan period for GIL Express is 28 days. Two 28-day renewals are allowed. After two renewals, the item must be returned to the holding library and requested again. Once an item becomes overdue, the student must return the item and request it again.

  6. GPC students may borrow 100 items from USG schools at one time. Each school sets the limit for the number of items a student may have out from their school. GPC's item check-out limit is ten items at one time.

  7. GPC loans only 28-day circulating books. Popular books and non-print materials are not eligible for GIL Express.

  8. Generally, GPC students will receive their GIL Express requests within 4 business days. Items will be held for 10 days before being sent back.

  9. GPC students must pay lost item fees to the school that owns the item. The student will be charged a statewide processing fee of $35.00 in addition to the lost item fee charged by the owning library.

  10. Students should be encouraged to check My Account from the GIL Catalog. All of the items that have been requested, that are in-transit to any selected pick-up library, that are on hold, that are checked out, all fines and fees and all outstanding blocks can be viewed on the student's My Account screen. This is the only place that all of this information displays together.
