Step by Step with Net Library

Net Library is a collection of electronic books available through GIL (https://gil.gpc.edu), GALILEO (http://www.galileo.usg.edu), or its own URL (http://www.netlibrary.com). Any one anywhere in the world may access Net Library, though access at home requires a free account and password. Because the University System buys specific Net Library collections, Net Library does not cover all subjects well. Natural history and animal care are examples of areas with weak coverage.

  1. There are three ways to access Net Library:

    a) Net Library books sometimes appear during a GIL search. Net Library books have a GIL entry like the one below.

    b) Search for Net Library books directly through GIL using a Quick Search such as subject/keyword netlibrary. For example, to find books on fire in Net Library, seach fire netlibrary.

    c) One can also search Net Library via the URL: http://www.netlibrary.com or by selecting Databases A-Z in the gold tabs at the top of the screen in GALILEO http://www.galileo.usg.edu, choosing N, and then clicking Net Library.

Net Library appears as a white, magenta, and grayish green screen.

  2. To access Net Library books found via GIL, click on their blue titles and then on the phrase, An electronic book accessible through GALILEO; click here, near the bottom of the book entry screen.

  3. To search for books within Net Library itself, rather than through GIL, type one or two keywords that describe your subject in to Net Library's Basic Search box. Then click on Search. Note: Searching Net Library from your home computer requires a free account and password that Net Library lets you create by clikcing the small Create a Free Account text link in the upper right corner.

  4. To search for a book with a particular title or by a particular author, adjust the scroll bar on the left of the Basic Search Box to read Title or Author instead of Full Text.

  5. Net Library presents a list of book titles, authors, summaries, and often cover pictures such as the one below.

  6. To read a book on the screen, click the View this ebook link. Net Library presents a framed screen with a table of contents on the left and individual page views on the right. A few Net Library books are PDF files, in which the book's pages pop up in a separate window.

  7. To turn the pages in a Net Library book, click the Next and Previous buttons at the top of the page.

  8. To print a Net Library book, print each page as you see it by clicking Print in your browser's File menu or clicking Adobe's printer icon for PDF books. This means many small print jobs and needs more than a bit of patience.

  9. To start a new search, click the small but colorful Net Library logo in the upper left corner of the screen.

  10. To end a search in Net Library, click your browser's Home icon or simply close your browser.
