Let's Title search. You want to read The Bluest Eye by Toni Morrison. A Quick Search for bluest eye might bring up some items that aren't the novel The Bluest Eye, like critical essays about the novel, and maybe even information about genetics and eye color. You need to weed out the items that aren't the novel.
Step One: Click the Exact Search tab on the GIL home page. (Click Exact Search in the window below.) Once the Exact Search page opens, you'll see a Search for: box and below that, a list of items labeled Search in: with buttons next to them. By selecting where to Search in, you tell GIL where in the item's record to look for your search terms.
Try it: Enter bluest eye in the Search for box, and then select the Title button. WARNING!!! The short articles a, an, and the at the beginning of a search will blow up your search. Make sure you have not entered the bluest eye--just bluest eye. (Also, remember that capitalization doesn't count, but spelling does.)
If you have entered the title without "the" and selected the Title button, click GO.
