GIL, an acronym for GALILEO Interconnected Libraries, is a search tool used to find books, ebooks, journals, magazines, newspapers, CDs, DVDs, and videos owned by the libraries of Georgia Perimeter College.
A long time ago libraries kept track of what they owned using the card catalog. A card catalog consisted
of small notecards filed
alphabetically in drawers. Every card represented a subject, the author, or the title of every item in the library. As computers became more mainstream, librarians said, "hey, let's toss the cards, electronically store our holdings information, and make it accessible by computer!" And so it was done.
So, GIL is everything you used to find in the card catalog, plus a little more. Additionally, GIL is considered an online, or Web-accessible, catalog.
